Hello, Summer and a BIG Announcement for OMG Yarn

Well, the summer season has officially started for our lovely little shop. That means planning like crazy for fall yarns, and enjoying a little bit of the warmer weather.

That also means knitting and crocheting with lighter weight yarns too! Fingering and sport weight yarns allow you to keep up with your fiber obsession without the weight of bulky yarn (pardon the pun) overheating you.

The Enderis Park Pullover in OMG Rushmore. Main color is #EarlGrey; complementary color is #Surrender.

I’ll be posting suggestions for some great summer projects, including new patterns from OMG, the newest of which will be posted this week and next week. I’ll also be hosting a few workshops (meaning one session classes) throughout the warmer months to keep your skills fresh.

So…Don’t forget that buying OMG patterns and yarn means I can continue to be here and keep up with the demand for better and better projects. Don’t let the summer slow you down.

Isn’t Allyson from Holla Knits gorgeous in her Enderis Park Pullover sample?! Work it!

Holla Knits Pattern Giveaway
In case you missed it, my newest pattern, the Enderis Park Pullover was released on June 15 on Holla Knits’ website. I’ll be hosting a pattern giveaway and participating in a blog tour on June 26 (you’ll see the post here). Keep an eye out for the details, coming soon. In the mean time, you can find the pattern for purchase on Holla Knits’ site here. If you need help with the project or would like to order some OMG yarn to make yours, shoot me an email (melina AT MidwestYarn DOT com) and I’ll be happy to help!

My BIG Announcement
My friends and family are privy to this news already, but I wanted to share with all my followers. No, I’m not pregnant. I’VE BEEN ACCEPTED TO BE A VENDOR VOGUE KNITTING LIVE: CHICAGO this October! It is, to say the least, a dream come true and I couldn’t have done this without your encouragement and support.

What this means is I HAVE to buy more yarn (and finish paying off the big shipment I just got), so make sure you keep supporting our online and brick and mortar stores so that we can have a successful show with all the yarns! I have a few more surprises up my sleeve to tempt your yarn obsession, so be sure you’re following the blog, Instagram, and Twitter to keep updated on all the preparation and peeks at what I’m working on.

Mid-Ohio Fiber Fair Recap
Well, the Fiber Fair has come and gone, and I had a great time! I met some great new contacts, saw some familiar faces, and introduced everyone to littlest shop helper, Sharky. While I didn’t reach my personal sales goal for the show, my attendance was well worth it, so many thanks to all who came out. I’m plotting what the next shows are to apply for, so stay tuned!

Pattern Preview and Weekend Update

Thank you to everyone who participated in our online auction a couple weeks ago, it was a big success and raised $920 for our trip to Ohio for the Mid-Ohio Fiber Fair!

Don’t forget, we’re closed tomorrow, Saturday, May 30, in order to travel to Columbus, Ohio for the TNNA summer show. Networking, visiting friends, looking at yarn to stock in the shop and potential new yarn bases for dyeing in the future. Please wish me safe travels!

That means no Stitch and Bitch tonight, but we’ll be hosting it next weekend as a part of Bay View’s Gallery Night from 6pm – 9pm as usual. Our featured artist this time is Allison Anderson who makes wonderful therapeutic jewelry (like our littlest shop helper’s teething necklace, which has helped him tremendously as he is popping in new teeth left and right). Join us for a relaxing evening!

And now, a couple of sneak peeks at a couple of the patterns coming out soon for OMG this summer…

Water Shawl 1

For our knitters…and this is the project that I have been jokingly calling the black hole for yarn.

Puff Star 3

And for our crocheters…

And if I can manage to stay awake on the flight home from TNNA tomorrow (yup, I’m flying down and flying back on the same day, ‘cos I got it like that…), I’ll type up my recap of the day.

Have a good weekend and we’ll see you next week!

The OMG Color Line Up

Well, it has started, my planning for the big summer show to debut our gorgeous yarns on a national stage. I’ll also be working on a few variegated colors as well, but these are my semi-solid colorways that are repeatable and that will be available for wholesale.

Did I miss any? Which ones are your favorites?

Coming Soon
We just ordered 420 skeins of yarn for the big summer shows, including some of the new yarn base which is a Worsted Weight Merino/Alpaca blend. Stay tuned for more behind the scenes looks and even some excited posts once I book travel plans for our Columbus trip!

2014: A Year in Review

What did 2014 bring us?

  • New Yarn:
    – OMG yarn expanded the line of hand dyed yarn to include 5 new yarn bases and 14 different semi-solid colors.
    – The shop got in a lot of new great yarns like Donegal Tweed by Tahki Stacy Charles, Kraemer Perfection Worsted, Mesa by Tahki Stacy Charles, and more
  • New Patterns Published
  • New Friends and New Customers, plus showed us how many loyal customers we have
My health suffered this year and for the first 7 months of the year we had very very very limited hours open (and even some spotty attendance for those few hours). The great news is that my health is stable and I’m slowly adding more time that I’m able to dedicate to the shop and yarn line. In fact, check out our “Visit Midwest Yarn” page, I just announced additional hours!
  • A New Baby
We call the new addition to our family, Sharky. He’s growing by leaps and bounds, and even showing signs that he’ll be walking soon (meaning, he’ll be ready to pull yarn off the shelves in no time, just like our other shop helper did when we first opened).

In spite of the personal struggles, what helped me through everything were the amazing number of loyal customers I had that encouraged me and tons of great new yarn and projects that I love.

2015 will prove to be a challenge as well, but I can only hope (and pray) that this new year will bring more personal growth, a continued passion for the fiber arts, and the accomplishment of a number of goals I’ve had for a long time. We’ll be entering the 4th year in business, and this is the year that will determine whether or not my lovely little endeavor of a yarn shop/studio makes it for the long haul. So here’s a look at what my goals are for 2015:

  • Attend the TNNA Summer Show with a booth or table to begin wholesaling OMG yarn to other yarn shops
  • I had a dream of designing a series of shawls and that dream will become a reality this year. Several lace shawls are in the works and I couldn’t be happier about how they are turning out. The series will be released the weekend of the TNNA Summer Show!
  • Grow the yarn shop to fully sustain both itself and make enough of an income for our family, because working for myself for almost 3 years has proven to be the best option for us and the boys, why wouldn’t we want to continue it?
  • Get new yarn, of course
  • Attend a few of the larger fiber arts shows like Stitches Midwest, Wisconsin Sheep and Wool, and more…I don’t know if I’ll be able to do them all, but it’s worth the shot. With me being able to take off every other Wednesday now, I should be able to plan far enough in advance and dye yarn for these bigger shows where I’ll need to take 500 to 1,000 or more skeins of yarn with me.

…and more. Hey, I can’t share all the fun things I have in store, where’s the fun in that?

In order to make all of this happen, I need you! Continue to stop in and support our little yarn shop. Each skein of yarn you buy, helps us get to some of the bigger shows to really get out there. Keep an eye out for our Project of the Month posts and continue to be the awesome knitters and crocheters you are. Without you, none of this would be possible.

Other News
I will be doing a “Year in Review” post later today or tomorrow. We will also be open tomorrow during the usual times for the rest of the week (11:00 am to 4:00 pm). Due to security reasons, the door will remain locked during business hours; ring the doorbell and I’ll let you in during shop hours (which will be changing beginning next week…more hours, yay!). Lastly, a new class schedule is being worked out. So far, I have several people interested in Intermediate Knitting, an Intermediate Crochet class, and sock knitting. 8 Days Left to Craft!

This is the busiest time of the year for all of us crafters. Knitters, crocheters, spinners, weavers…all of us fiber artists are feverishly working to get our hand made items finished for our loved ones before the holidays. I have several new babies to make presents for, and that’s not including my own little guys who’s gifts are off the needles.

And in the background I am brainstorming all the new projects I need to get started with once the holidays are over. OMG’s overwhelming success both in-store and online is leaving me happy and eager to do more, but I have a few things to work on before I do.

I have a Pinterest Board for this coming Spring 2015 and Fall 2015 design ideas. I won’t divulge what I’m actually doing before the late May release of new patterns, but maybe my brainstorming will get you excited (or even inspire some projects of your own).

Project of the Month
Between Small Business Saturday and today, I’ve asked our followers whether or not they’d be willing to participate in a Project of the Month Club for OMG Yarns. The idea is that it will be similar to doing a yarn of the month, but with an actual project associated. People would buy the kit offered, which includes yarn and a pattern that I choose as that month’s project. More details to come soon, but I’ll be posting January’s project soon so that people will be able to order their yarn. It’s looking like it will be a 1-2 skein knit cowl with a Valentine’s Day theme (so you can have a lovely cowl knit in time for Valentine’s Day). I came across the pattern while pinning (Pinteresting?) one day. Keep an eye out, it’s coming soon!
Happy crafting!

PS. We have new yarn in from Tahki Stacy Charles. Including Mesa (all colors) and Donegal Tweed. Available in-store only.
