About OMG – Hand painted yarns and fibers by Melina Martin Gingras

OMG is the house brand for Midwest Yarn, an independently-owned yarn shop located in Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The line of hand dyed and hand spun yarns was launched in 2012. Our new yarns are luxurious, American-made yarns that are like no other. Made from domestic wools, each of our highly sought after yarn bases are a treat to knit and crochet and are sure to brighten any project you may think of.

About Me
My name is Melina Martin Gingras and I am the yarnaholic turned fiberista, dyer, and designer.  My passion for the arts is what inspired me to begin expressing myself through yarn dyeing and knitwear design.  I enjoy sharing my love of yarn with others, why else would I start a yarn shop?

Ok, so maybe I also started a shop so I could pet the yarn all day too…  😉

My mother taught me how to knit and crochet when I was in third grade.  I’d sneak knitting needles to school and knit during recess.  Since then, I’ve been knitting and crocheting off and on.

In 2011, after leaving my job as a health care administrator to become a stay at home mom, my mother suggested I start dyeing yarn as a way to pass the time (I was blessed with a pretty laid back toddler, so I fortunately had a lot of flexibility with daily activities).  After many months dyeing and running around the state to check out small, independently owned yarn shops, I decided to open my own yarn shop, and thus Midwest Yarn was born.

After a brief stint online, we opened doors to the brick and mortar shop in May  2012.  There, I had a studio from which I could do all the things I love, designing, knitting, spinning, dyeing yarn, all while having my son around.

I participate in Knit Picks’ Independent Designer Program and self-publish my own patterns for OMG Yarn.
